Project 3- Title sequence of a film

Out of all three projects, this is my favourite one. I feel that in this project, I combined all my previous skills that I learnt in the first two productions- and created my final one, which I feel is my best.

With this project, I did a lot of research into the FlashForward drama. This was to make sure that my version would take on a new form and dimension. I also did a lot of research and designing into the title; so that I could create a new brand identity for my FlashForward film- which I felt would encompass the genres of thriller, adventure, horror and  sci-fi.

My first idea was my only idea. I developed it, as I went along, but I always knew that I wanted to keep it simple creating suspense, tension and fear simultaneously. Initially, I did want to include video footage, however, I felt it would look too much like a film trailer or promo, which was not the aim of this particular task.

I chose the audio from the actual trailer of the FlashForward drama. The audio is a mixture of voice-overs and dramatic music. I edited this using Adobe Soundbooth and WavePad sound editor. I found the timing of the music and each beat quite difficult to edit alongside the title sequence, as the timing had to be perfect. For example, when there was a heavy beat, I inserted a flash effect, which I had to make sure appeared at the same time and disappeared just as quickly. Additionally, because in the background the camera rotates around the eye, I had to make sure that each movement is in time with each beat- this would ensure that maximum suspense is created.

I think on this project, if it didn’t have sound, it would not have the same level of suspense. I purposefully chose a speech to play at the very beginning of the title sequence, to instantly grab the viewer. I created an echo effect and applied the equalizer effect, to enforce this type of atmosphere.

I applied a variety of effects to this title sequence, but I don’t think I overdid it. The animation effects and presets which I applied onto  the text, worked well with the music. I looked at various film title sequences to see what information they include, and I found it varies quite dramatically. In the opening title sequence, some films include the directors, cast, production designer and creators etc. Whilst some others include just the director and the main cast members. Considering the product that I had to make, and the duration in which I could make it- I decided to include just the production, director and main cast members. I was pleased with the way I incorporated all of this into the first couple of frames of the title sequence- not to remove any focus away from what was actually going on in the background.

I faced less difficulty on this project because I was equipped with the technique and knowledge, that I had learned from the other two. As a result, l I finished this project within a good time frame. In general, I am pleased with the progress that I’ve made. There is always room for me to improve, and if I were to extend the duration of the title sequence- then that would allow me to expand my ideas and creativity even more.
